One of the unique aspects of many New Westminster heritage houses are the name plaques. The name plaque identify the year the name and year the house was built. The name is often in honour of the first owners or the builder.

The Judson Mountain House, built in 1907, is one of these New Westminster historical gems. In the summer of 2016, the expert painting team at Warline, restored and repainted the exterior.

Wood repairs included replacing trim boards, window sills and other areas that had long deteriorated due to exposure. Warline’s in-house carpentry team took care of all these areas before our painting crew moved it to work their magic.

The cape cod style house was already blue with a cream trim but it was dark and needed some brightening up. Previously, the windows had been painted a deep red so the house had a three colour scheme, typical of heritage homes. However, this small house was being overpowered by the large roof. Making the trim appear more substantial was key to balancing the house. Warline’s colour design team created virtual mock-ups to ensure changing the trim from two colours to one was the way to go. And it was.

Eliminating the red detailing on the house helped the porch trim appear wider as well as brightened up the large porch area.

THE COLOURS

The body of the house was painted in Benjamin Moore West Coast Blue CC-750. We painted the trim in the very rich and creamy Benjamin Moore Mannequin Cream OC-92.

We painted the front door in High Gloss Benjamin Moore Grand Entrance paint in Hawthorne Yellow HC-4.

The outer perimeter fence remained a deep red in Benjamin Moore New London Burgundy HC-61. The rich burgundy frames the house and compliment the roof.

Finally, we sanded the front porch bare with using our Festool sanding equipment to prep it for a coat of our favourite deck stain, Sikkens SDR in Butternut 072.

The results? An updated bright and cheerful home perfect for this family to enjoy for many more years.
